"Since I turned 18 I've voted in every election I possibly could. City, state, national, every one. It doesn't always turn out the way I'd like, but I will never sit out an election. I believe that voting is the very least we can do if we want a fair, just, and caring society. But we can do so much more, and for me that 'more' has been sewing with the Aunties. The Aunties are all about bringing fairness, justice and care to those who need it right now. Aunties also bring that care to each other. My RBG collar was knitted for me by fellow Auntie Irene Tayag Laut, the VOTE mask was made by Auntie Sanae. I wore both with pride today as I voted for fairness, justice, and CHANGE."

"I vote for change, this country is broken, divided and in crisis. I vote because my right to vote had to be won. I vote for my daughters. I vote for equality for all, regardless of color, sexuality, gender, socio economic status. I vote because I believe in love, hope, science, equality, and want a leader who does too.

I sew because our ‘leaders’ have failed us. I sew because 200K are dead, and didn't have to be. I sew because I don't know how else to help. I sew in solidarity with those fighting this virus. I sew with love and hope in my heart."

Our friends at Standing Rock and those living on ancestral homeland in the Black Hills are facing below zero temperatures this winter. Folks are dying from cold exposure and some are having to camp as they quarantine. And many children brave the winter without coats or boots. Show your solidarity by offering what they need to stay warm this winter.

"I sewed for a living for 17 years. I worked for a

"I sewed for a living for 17 years. I worked for a San Francisco dressmaker of some renown, Hiromi Okada. She taught me everything about the craft as well as economics. She was one of only 7 women to graduate with an economics degree at her university in Japan. I tell that story because it informed (and radicalized) my perception of “labor.”

Later I ended up working in clinical research at UCSF. In fact, my department is funded by NIAID. Yes, that NIAID – the one Dr. Fauci heads. There too I’ve gotten schooled not just in project management, but science as well. So, sewing for A.S.S. has been a gratifying way for me to apply multiple skills to benefit a diverse cohort.

You might have read about a theory from some researchers that masks might provide a crude immunization against COVID for some people.
Considering A.S.S.’s wide distribution of masks, I wonder if a group of our recipients might someday provide data for these scientists. (I would LOVE that!)

But there is no question that at 85K+ masks sewn and distributed, productivity, economies of scale, and supply chain competence within a green, non-centralized (but skillfully led) organization are not only possible, they are superior.

My meager contribution to A.S.S. has truthfully more to do with masking my shame for not advocating for BIPOC communities, at-risk populations, and essential workers during non-Armageddon years when they needed safety and security as much as they do now. I’m grateful to witness the success of the Auntie/Uncle/child labor-lazy baby network. It gives me confidence that – with others – I will be able to contribute to the much, much harder work our country has ahead of it.

As part of #VotingTogether, Auntie Sewing Squad would like to acknowledge that we care for many communities via mask sewing, we care for each other via Auntie Care, and we care for this country by VOTING on November 3. Auntie Duyen made this tapestry our of fabric scraps which shows all of the ways she has helped distribute care for the squad.

"I joined ASS in early April because sewing masks was the simplest thing I could do in a time of uncertainty that required so many changes at once. This group is BONKERS! Selfless, funny, and big-hearted seamstresses are literally saving lives by getting cloth onto faces left behind in this pandemic. The humor, show-off-your-completed-masks photos, and the civility of this group are all that’s right in this world right now. In a rocking boat, ASS has been the calm and steady force reminding me that we can rage, grief, and rejoice in community during turbulent times.

I have made 1,300 masks so far and now help with Auntie Care work---getting donated treats to hard working aunties. I am constantly amazed by how Auntie Care travels great distances, passes through many hands and crosses imaginary and physical boundaries. This tapestry is a depiction of 3 Auntie Care-vans I have been a part of where love transcends distances and counties (LA is huge yo!).

I am also filling out my mail-in ballot as I am working on this tapestry. Voting and sewing masks are intricately connected. If more people were like ASS members--caring, respectful, and willing to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty in the face of a challenge--the world would be one hell of a better place."

Our Auntie Aisha on the East Coast recently announced a huge accomplishment! She voted and she finished sewing her 1000th mask!

"I’m a reporter for a nonprofit media outlet. I won’t say its name here, but if you listen to public radio, you’ve probably heard me. I’ve been sewing since I was in first grade when my mother gave me a tiny sewing machine for Christmas.

When the pandemic hit and we realized that the nation was unprepared to provide the right protective equipment to everybody who needed it, I raided my stash of cotton fabrics (that I had intended to sew into nice summer shirts) and made dozens of masks instead.

My editor called me up in March and said our facilities manager couldn’t get a supply of masks quickly enough for our colleagues who still worked in the building, and would I please take a work day and make masks for everybody? Well, of course I did.

That led to me doing a live event on mask-making and through that, and doing a story about smiling when your face is covered, I met Kristina Wong. And started sewing masks for the Auntie Sewing Squad.

In my job, I don’t express a lot of political opinions, and you won’t see me doing it on the Auntie Facebook page either. But my actions are intended to benefit those who don’t have the disposable income to buy their own masks and to shame a big government that has not considered this vast unmet need.

I’m proud to be a cog in the machine offering up the work of my hands to people who need it."
